5 Things High School Never Taught Me

What you won’t learn in the classroom

High school will  teach you how to write and essay, burn a hundred calories in gym, but they wont teach you this.

  1. That the struggle is real. You will find yourself juggling, work, friends, free time, and yet still have 2 hours of homework. When you come home you have about 6 hours before 10:00 hits. In six hours your expected to do all these things left and right. While doing all this still be mentally okay and maybe fit in food too. All this hustle is chaotic, but trust me when I say do all the things you want and can. It is SO SO worth it in the end when you are more prepared for what is about to hit you after graduation than the kid next to you.
  2. Few is better. By the time you are a senior you will have found you have only one or two people you trust 100% then have a couple more friends that you spend time with and do things with outside school. But that is all you need. I remember the saying “It’s better to have 4 quarters, than 100 pennies” and they’re right. You will look back and remember the days where you were trying to get 50 Snapchat streaks, more Instagram followers, and have more people texting you at once. I’m telling you that you’ll want to spend time with people who spend time with you. The people that aren’t just a number to achieve some time of “status” that will make you “popular” (if that’s even still a thing?).
  3. Have goals. Just because you are in high school shouldn’t limit you from doing something you strive to do. It never hurt any one to get a head start. I promise you that if you have goals, you have motivation to achieve something no matter what it is you’ll find a way. Don’t let the title of a high school student limit you.
  4. Face it you’re going to be broke. In high school you should be spending ridiculous amounts of money on gas, food, events tickets, clothes, and whatever the trending activity is. It sucks being broke and having no money, but it’s worse having no memories and experiences to look back on. I recommend that you save some cash, but don’t be shy to have fun and embrace the impulsive buying while you can.
  5. Take care of yourself. You’re thrown to do lists from family and teachers, or even friends. But what about your own wants and needs? Be selfish, you’re allowed to tell your friends no because you want to catch up on Netflix. You most certainly are allowed to tell your boyfriend you’re busy, so you can have a girls night. It’s your life, your wants, and your allowed to take care of yourself.

Take these 4 years to grow, learn, and have memories to look back onto. I promise you wont regret it.
