Babyprenuer’s : Erin Girouard – From a Hobby to a Passion

A lot of the Babyprenuer’s I haven’t gotten the chance to meet, But some I have. Erin is one of the few I have been able to hug and laugh with. We met over the summer at The Gathering ( hosted by Hope Taylor and Caroline Logan), and it felt like I’ve known her forever! Erin is an incredible photographer photographing weddings, Portraits, and Brands in New Hampshire. Would you ever guess this girl is 17, but get this she was even younger when she started.

Man on man her answer’s here are so perfect, really letting us know who she is. So much that I just want her answers to speak for themselves. Before we dive in to her Q+A I wanted to share one specific answer. I’ve noticed when I ask this question the answer’s are always so on point. Erin was asked what her advice would be to someone else going through the same things. She said, ” If you are passionate about something, there is always going to be someone who tells you “you can’t”. It will be hard to ignore those people but don’t let them get to you. Hustle to prove them wrong and show them that you can be successful doing what you love. Show them that success is more than the numbers and that being happy (and making others happy) is so much more valuable.” AMEN sista.

Here’s a piece of Erin’s story
Q: How did you get started, what compelled you to start?

A: ” I bought a little point and shoot camera in 2013 so that I could take pictures on a family vacation to Bermuda, it was $99 for amazon and I had saved up my money so that I could buy it. (Funny story, the day it came in I was so excited that I jumped on the bubble wrap from the package and sprained my ankle, exactly a week before our vacation lol) I had no interest in photography at the time, I just wanted to document our trip. I discovered on that vacation that I loved taking pictures of palm trees and flowers. After that I became obsessed and took a million pictures of flowers by my house. I then started to learn about all the different cameras out there and came across a 365 challenge, where you take a picture every day for a year. Then I knew I wanted to buy a more advanced camera, so I started doing research and decided on a Canon Rebel t5. Itt was when I was at my Aunt’s house and pulled out my phone to continue looking at cameras when I realized that Canon had a huge sale on the exact camera I wanted. It was $400 and being 15 at the time, I didn’t have a job and couldn’t buy the camera on my own, but I looked anyways. My Aunt had seen how happy taking pictures made me, so she offered to loan me the money to buy it at the sale price. She wrote up a contract for me and using my Christmas and Birthday money from that year, I repaid her within a year for the camera she loaned me money for. During that flower obsessed stage (who am I kidding that definitely wasn’t a stage its still going on hahah) my new camera arrived and my parents took me to Prescott Park in Portsmouth (beginning my love for Portsmouth *heart eyes*) where there were flower beds EVERYWHERE, I was in heaven. I would post my pictures and do photoshoots with my friends and soon after that people I know started to ask how much I charged for photoshoots. I remember being shocked that they would pay me for taking pictures!! After lots of friend photoshoots and TONS of practice with my camera, I made a website and starting taking bookings. Anddd thats the very long story of how I got started :))) ”

Q: How has your age affected your business ( in a positive or negative way) ?

A: ” Being young has given me a head start to my career, and I’m so thankful that I discovered what I love so early. It has given me the time to build my business and book weddings at 17. It’s definitely not all positive though, a lot of people look down on people like me and say that I’m not experienced enough or that I should explore other career options because being self employed isn’t profitable. Serving others through photography is what I’m most passionate about and I couldn’t imagine pursuing anything else. ”

Q: What is your favorite thing about your business?
A: ” Honestly, the people are my favorite. Meeting new people, becoming friends with my couples and seniors, becoming friends with other wedding vendors, meeting other photographers, it has brought out an extroverted (INFJ here!) side of me that I love. “
Q: What is a struggle you face?

A: ” Time is probably the biggest struggle I face. Anyone running a business in school will understand that time is so so limited. For the past year and a half I have also had a part time job. leaving little time for my business.”

Q: What is one of the biggest goals you have when it comes to your business?

A: ” One of my goals for each and every wedding, couple, senior and client is to make them feel loved. I want to be a part of their lives, learn about them, and get excited with them. ”

Q: Biggest lesson you’ve learned

A: ” Age does not determine your work or value. The worth of your business as an entrepreneur has absolutely nothing to do with your age. It has everything to do with your passion and how hard you work to pursue your dream. ”

Q: 3 fun facts about yourself
A: ” 1. I LOVE to travel. Italy and Ireland are the top two places on my list right now!!
2. I just started my senior year of high school today!
3. Greenhouses are my favorite senior sesh locations!! “
Q: Who is your biggest inspiration?
A: “Ahh do I have to choose one?! Heres a few 😉 Hope Taylor, Natalie Franke, Wyn Wiley, Caroline Logan, Katelyn James “
